The House at The Tricycle

Opening next Month at the Tricycle this is a savagely funny reworking of the themes of the house of Bernarda Alba set in to a creole family in New Orleans in 1836. It is a fascinating design challenge in the Tricycle space, written with a mix of naturalistic demands of many rooms within the one house and the magic realism freedom of ghosts and voodoo. Multiple rooms and levels would be impossible with the sightlines of the theatre, so instead I have tried to create one space which evokes new Orleans but also seems to entrap the characters. Circles within circles in the marquetry of the floor and a balustraded balcony which links into the theatres own will hopefully allow scenes to flow and overlap with each other.
