Very strange to be reviving a show from 2005, but it has been great to just see the floor run of Macbeth at Scottish Opera. The set has survived a long incarceration in a container store in Glasgow( a fab location one day for site specific piece). Director Dominic Hill has been great at pushing the production further; looking back at the earlier show there were several inconsistencies between the brutal Bosnia inspired environment and the perhaps too gentile props and costumes. A banquet table with white table cloth, carved wood chairs and ornate loving cup has been replaced with metal table, plastic sheeting and a crate of vodka. DJ’s for slightly too shiny suits. seeing it today it worked and was a strong reminder that theatre only works in its moment, in relation to events now. Originally the echoes were Bosnia now it feels like Ukraine , and with distance one can look back on a show and ask why did we do it like that, the new solutions seem to gel so much better with the space.
