Antony and Cleopatra goes Public

The final leg of the leg of the RSC/Gable Stage/ Public Theatre collaboration is now open in New York in the intimate Anspacher Theatre. A return to the thrust format we began with in Stratford but on  a smaller scale. The room is one of the old reading rooms of the library building that the theatre occupies with five different venues. The audience banks sit within the Corinthian columns of the space, two of which are in the  the stage area. It was this that pushed the design for all three spaces to use the columns as both symbols of the three pillared Roman world , but also as the architecture of the Eighteenth century French colonisers of Haiti in Tarell’s version. The show has grown a lot over its three different opennings, i hope it goes down well with New Yorkers.
