Pride and Prejudice first preview

I hadn’t expected our actors to be suffering from the heat, all our pre-planning was about thermal underwear for this outdoor production at Regent’s Park, yet yesterday afternoon they were dropping apace, as Lydia would say, despite all the bonnets. I have never done such a pastel toned show, but it feels right for the period and Max Jones’ sculptural setting. The main challenge with the narrative arc has been to tell the different stories of  social status within the Meryton dance and Netherfield Ball, while many of the characters never leave the stage (Elizabeth is only offstage for three pages in the whole show). So we have had to devise a basic costume onto which we can add layers and indeed part of the joy of the production is seeing live all the preparations before the event. At the moment Darcy remains fully clothed and  dry , but that could all change if the heavens open tonight…
