Hamlet Happens

As  Scotland woke to a no vote the reluctance to explore a new world seemed echoed in Hamlets hesitance to discover what it might like in that undiscovered country. The world of the play as a nightmarish fusion of abandoned warehouse, back stage at a vaudeville  theatre and old reel to reel tape players seems to be bearing fruit. It is a clear and disturbing vision, of family dysfunction , misplaced sexual desire and dark humour. Brian Ferguson gives a beautiful performance full of great humour and rage, while there is excellent work from the rest of the cast, who never leave the space swapping costume and character and acting as on stage band as well. Excellent reviews in all the papers see The Scotsman

  1. Dear Tom
I’m a post grad at the University of Edinburgh for Theatre and Performance Studies,
I have seen it twice in order to analyze it for my final essay, and I must say it is BRILLIANT!
I’m so interested in your design, and curious about that actors mostly performed on the front of stage where the table sets, and the space between the front and the back area where the ensemble sets is empty.
    Why you do that?

    Thanks
    Best regards
    Livia

    • I started out with Peter Brook’s company and his use of a carpet to create a focused space for actors within a more epic environment is still at the heart of my work, so the domestic environments created by the sofa, tables etc are contrasted with the larger more brutal environment. the U/S area also serves as a space where the company can act as our band and drift in and out of character.
